CENTO3 is a project dedicated to writing instruments, the last one designed in 2001 by Achille Castiglioni and Gianfranco Cavaglià, engineered and created in 2021 by Egoundesign, in collaboration with architect Cavaglià and the Achille Castiglioni Foundation. The name CENTO3 reflects the time elapsed between Castiglioni's birth (1918) and the presentation of the 2021 edition: 103 years. Furthermore, three is a recurring figure in the project: there are three partners, three generations, three types of writing instruments proposed, and three arches that define the object's characteristic trilobate shape.
A design born from the study of the ergonomics of the handle conducted by Castiglioni and Cavaglià, therefore conceived for adapt to the hand and accommodate the three fingers holding the instrument in the most comfortable position.Although ingenious, this formal solution proved too complex to realize with the production technologies of the time, leaving the project unfinished for twenty years. EGOUNDESIGN identified 3D printing as the key to bringing CENTO3 to life. Through FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) technology, which allows for layer-by-layer construction, it was possible to produce complex shapes with creative freedom and versatility. 3D printing, now mature, guaranteed a knurled texture and a soft-touch finish, also improving the instrument's grip. Another strength of the project is its research into materials.
CENTO3 is made with a filament based on PLA (polylactic acid)Obtained from renewable sources such as corn starch, enriched with graphene, a material derived from graphite, composed of a monoatomic layer of carbon. Lightweight, resistant, and high-performance, graphene is considered "the material of the future" due to its extraordinary technological properties. Today, CENTO3 is available in the multifunctional CENTO3.E model, the pocket fountain pen CENTO3.G, the mechanical pencil CENTO3.O, and the rollerball pen CENTO3.R in the carbon color characteristic of graphene.
